This 3-tonne bronze equestrian statue entitled Löwenkämpfer (The Lion Fighter) is one of a pair installed outside Berlin's world-renowned Altes Museum. Designed by Albert Wollf, it was inspired by the work of Christian Daniel Rausch - famous for the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great on the city's central Unter den Linden boulevard.
This bronze equestrian statue depicts a nude male figure seated on a rearing horse. A roaring lion lying just beneath the horse reaches up and rakes its claws across the front proper right flank of the horse. The male figure holding a spear in his raised proper right hand is poised to stab the lion. The imagery is violent and fantastical.
