The father Junipero Serra statue, holding aloft a cross and bearing a model of a Spanish mission, was first installed in the downtown area by the Knights of Columbus in 1932. “IHS” is visible in the center of a cross in Serra’s right hand. “IHS” is from the similar-looking letters at the beginning of Jesus’ name in Greek: ΙΗΣ (the letters iota, eta, and sigma).
Spanish missionary Juniper Serra established his first U.S. mission in 1769. He built eight more California missions over the next thirteen years. He was granted sainthood in 2015. Serra's feast day is celebrated on July 1 in the United States and on August 26 in Mexico. He is considered to be the patron saint of California, Hispanic Americans, and religious vocations.
