Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln, February 12, 1809-April 15, 1865), American politician, strategist, and 16th president. Lincoln was the first Republican president to lead the abolition of African-American slavery during his tenure.
In August 1834, Lincoln was elected to the Illinois Congress as a Whig. In 1856, Lincoln withdrew from the Whig Party and joined the newly formed Republican Party. In November 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States. After the outbreak of the American Civil War, Lincoln signed the "Homestead Law" and promulgated the "Declaration of the Emancipation of Black Slaves", which laid the foundation for the North to win the Civil War. On November 8, 1864, Lincoln was re-elected as President of the United States. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Booth. He died the next morning. He was only 56 years old and was the first American president to be assassinated.
During the outbreak of the Civil War in the United States, Lincoln firmly opposed national division. He abolished slavery in the rebellious states, defeated the forces of separation in the south, and safeguarded the equal rights of the United States of America and its territories, regardless of race or human being.
In 2006, Abraham Lincoln was rated # 1 among the top 100 people in the United States by the authoritative American journal Atlantic Monthly.
