It is often said that Madrid is the only city in the world with a monument to the Devil. In fact, it is a fountain, representing the Fallen Angel being exiled from Paradise. Located in the Retiro tourist area, it was sculpted by Ricardo Bellver in 1878 for the Paris World Fair held that year. The Fallen Angel is set atop a marble pillar in the midst of a fountain decorated with sinister demonic entities and some rather miscast reptiles.
Inspired by John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, the remarkable work of art depicts Lucifer, the fallen angel who was cast out of heaven to become Satan.
The argument about the fall of the archangel Lucifer is as follows:
One day, God took the Son to tour the heavens and made the angels kneel down to worship the Son. Since angels are energy bodies with no entity, and the Son has the same entity as God, except for not gaining the power of God, God believes that the Son who has the entity is second only to himself;
Lucifer believed that the power of the Son was too low, and God let the angels kneel to the Son was an insult to his dignity, so he led a third of the angels in the heavens to rebel. Lucifer's extreme pride and self-confidence can overthrow God.
However, Lucifer and his army were defeated by the new Seraphim, but Lucifer did not admit that he failed to lead his remaining disabled generals to fall to heaven and lose the glory they once possessed. Later, Lucifer rebuilt a new world similar to heaven in hell, and the fallen angels who followed Lucifer became demons.
