Puerta del Sol is a square located in the center of the Spanish capital Madrid. It is also the center point (0 km) of the Spanish road network. There are 10 streets around it radiating outward. Surrounded by department stores and various shops, the square is one of Madrid's main busy business districts and tourist attractions. In Spain, the New Year's Eve tradition of eating twelve grapes (Doce uvas) with the sound of twelve bells originated here. Since December 31, 1962, the state-run Spanish television station began to broadcast live the New Year celebrations here.
There are many famous sights in Puerta del Sol. To the south is the old postal building. The zero kilometer sign (Placa del kilómetro cero) is on the sidewalk in front of the building, marking the center of the Spanish road network. There is also a statue of Carlos III on the south side of the square, and many public works were initiated by him. On the east side of the square, above the buildings between Alcala Street and San Jeronimo Street, is the famous Tio Pepe. To the north is a statue of "Bear and Strawberry Tree" (El oso y el madroño, also translated "Bear and Heather Tree"), which is the emblem of the city of Madrid.
